The romantic getaway guide to Marrakech

We are delighted to share this guide for couples looking for a Romantic Get Away in Marrakech, this is a little Q&A we had with our guest's Benja and Hubby

Marrakech, a city where history and modernity dance together in an intricate ballet, offers the perfect backdrop for a romantic anniversary getaway. My husband and I recently celebrated our 25th anniversary in this vibrant city, and we couldn't wait to share our experience and tips with other couples considering a similar adventure.

What to Consider Before Planning Your Anniversary Getaway

When planning an anniversary trip, we look for destinations that offer a mix of relaxation, culture, and a hint of adventure. We want a place where we can unwind but also explore new experiences together. Safety, accessibility, and accommodation options are also crucial factors. For us, Marrakech ticked all the boxes.

Our Experience in and Around Marrakech

Traveling in and around Marrakech was seamless and enchanting. The city’s medina is a labyrinth of narrow alleys filled with bustling souks, fragrant with spices and vibrant with colours. We stayed at Riad Botanica, our absolute favorite riad, which provided a serene oasis amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. The hospitality was impeccable, making us feel at home from the moment we arrived.

Riad Botanica is a true gem in Marrakech. Nestled in the heart of the medina, it combines traditional Moroccan architecture with modern comforts. The riad features beautifully decorated rooms, each with its own unique charm. The lush gardens and rooftop terrace offer peaceful retreats from the city’s excitement. The staff at Riad Botanica go above and beyond to ensure a perfect stay, providing personalized service and attention to detail. Whether it’s enjoying a delightful breakfast in the garden or sipping mint tea on the rooftop while watching the sunset, every moment at Riad Botanica is a treasured memory.

Top Travel Tips: What to Pack and Wear

  1. Comfortable Clothing: Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal for the warm days. Modest clothing is recommended when visiting religious sites.
  2. Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the medina.
  3. Sunscreen and Hat: The sun can be intense, so protect yourself. I bought a lovely panama hat this year from André le Chapelier, a renowned French milliner living in Marrakech, and it was both stylish and practical.
  4. Camera: To capture the stunning architecture and vibrant street scenes.
  5. Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key.

What We Enjoyed the Most

Our favorite part of the trip was getting lost in the souks, discovering hidden gems, and engaging with local artisans. We also cherished the tranquil moments at Riad Botanica, enjoying their beautiful garden and rooftop views. The riad’s peaceful ambiance provided the perfect contrast to the lively medina, allowing us to relax and rejuvenate.

Food and Weather

The food in Marrakech is a culinary delight, with tagines, couscous, and a variety of street food to tantalize your taste buds. We particularly loved dining at local eateries, experiencing the flavors of authentic Moroccan cuisine.

We always visit at the end of June and the start of July, and while the last week can start to get hot, it is a very comfortable heat—a dry heat that we absolutely love. Unlike the often uncomfortable heat in Scandinavia, the warmth in Marrakech is pleasant and dry. It’s always a good excuse to retreat into the shade for a lovely mint tea and some dates.

Must-See List for Couples in Marrakech

  1. Jemaa el-Fnaa: The main square, bustling with life and entertainment.
  2. Majorelle Garden: A beautiful and serene garden perfect for a romantic walk.
  3. Bahia Palace: Stunning architecture and beautiful gardens.
  4. Saadian Tombs: Historical and fascinating.
  5. Koutoubia Mosque: Iconic landmark with a peaceful atmosphere.
  6. Medina Souks: For shopping and soaking in the local culture.
  7. Atlas Mountains: A day trip for breathtaking views and adventure.
  8. Hammam Experience: Relax and rejuvenate together.
  9. Le Jardin Secret: A hidden gem in the medina, perfect for a quiet moment.
  10. Cooking Class: Learn to make traditional Moroccan dishes together.
  11. Yves Saint Laurent Museum: Explore the life and work of the fashion icon.
  12. Photography Museum (Maison de la Photographie): Discover stunning historical photographs of Morocco.
  13. Dar Si Said Museum: A beautiful museum dedicated to Moroccan arts and crafts.

Safety and Feelings

We have always felt safe in Marrakech. Despite traveling the world and facing various challenges, Marrakech has always been a place of security and peace for us. The locals are friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall sense of safety.

Romance in Marrakech

Marrakech is undeniably romantic. The enchanting atmosphere, luxurious riads, and intimate dining options make it an ideal destination for anniversaries or honeymoons. We recommend staying for at least five days to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the best times to visit Marrakech. The weather is perfect for exploring the city and enjoying outdoor activities. However, we find that early summer, while warm, is still very pleasant due to the dry heat.

Shopping Tips

For those who love to shop, Marrakech is a paradise. We recommend picking up some beautiful candle holders as souvenirs. A hot tip: book extra baggage for your flight home and buy a couple of exquisite, authentic Moroccan rugs and pillows. It’s cheaper to pay for additional baggage than to ship these treasures.

Future Plans and Reflections

Marrakech has become our sanctuary, a place where we find peace and experience a mental detox. I’m already planning next year’s trip with our three daughters, turning it into a girls’ trip. I hope to stay at Riad Botanica again and work on my new research book about Sustainable leadership.

In conclusion, Marrakech is a fantastic destination for a romantic getaway. Whether it’s your anniversary, honeymoon, or just a special trip together, this city offers everything you need for an unforgettable experience. We can’t recommend it highly enough!

Happy travels!
Benja
