A Solo Female Traveller’s Paradise

In this guide, we’ll explore the best tips, must-visit spots, and insider advice to help you make the most of your solo adventure in Marrakech. From navigating the bustling markets to finding serene retreats, you’ll discover how to experience the magic of Marrakech with confidence and ease.

Marrakech is bursting with vibrant colours, tastes, souks, stunning palaces, and rich history. It is an enchanting destination that offers a unique blend of adventure and tranquility. For solo female travellers, Marrakech is a gem that promises a safe and unforgettable journey filled with cultural richness and warm hospitality.

My name is Charlie, I’m a content creator from London with a passion for interior design and travel and love combining the two when I can.

I grew up in Australia where it’s pretty remote, flying to the next country is possible but nowhere near like having Europe on your doorstep. As soon as I moved to London I took advantage of being able to fly anywhere at a moment’s notice for a city break or a longer jaunt around some Greek islands over summer. I’ve also been fortunate enough to travel a lot for work which I always used as an excuse to explore as much as possible in my free time and try to stay at hotels I had on my list for ages. I started sharing more of my travels and discoveries of hotels, cafes, restaurants, museums, etc. on Instagram and then it took off from there. No matter where I was in the world, I was determined to find THE prettiest place and I guess I’ve never lost that!

Can you please share your experience about travelling solo in Marrakech?

I’ve only had positive experiences whilst travelling around the city whether it’s been with friends, my partner or my own. It’s an easy city to get around and you can take it at your own pace, there’s loads to do if you’re looking for an adventure but equally there’s so many great rooftop bars and cozy cafes to chill in.

The souks are busier than ever with loads of mopeds and bikes going through them so be prepared for a less chill (but still fun) experience there.

What would be some of your travel tips inc what to pack and what to wear?

It depends on the time of year and it can change so much within a month! For example, April is still variable and you definitely need a jacket but then May is hot and you can definitely leave your jacket at home. I find I can get around easily enough with sandals but if you want to see any of the Atlas Mountains or surrounding areas, take a good pair of trainers! Also make sure you have a cover up for your arms and shoulders when attending religious sites.

What did you enjoy the most?

The rooftop bars, the riads and all the beautiful pottery in the souks. And of course, the riads. I’ve tried quite a few now but nothing compares to Riad Botanica. I love that it’s tucked away, you almost wouldn’t know it was there… but then you step inside and it’s total paradise. Everything from the service, the thoughtful décor, the food… it’s such a special experience.

What was the food, weather like?

I’m vegetarian and gluten intolerant. I certainly found in my most recent trip there were more veggie / vegan options which is great. Some restaurants and riads weren’t always clued up on gluten intolerance but they would always try and accommodate. I ate well and managed to find plenty of restaurants.

What were the top five/ten things that you would say are on the must see list whilst in Marrakech?

  1. Dar El Bacha
  2. Bahia Palace
  3. Le Jardin Secret
  4. Maison de la Photographie
  5. Ben Youseff Madrasa

How did you feel? Would you say it's safe to visit?

It’s 100% safe. The first time I went I wouldn’t say I didn’t feel safe but there were a lot less tourists then and I stuck out like a sore thumb being blonde (cue all the “Lady Gaga!” calls, she was more relevant at the time 🤣) but in my more recent trip, I just felt like another tourist.

What would you say to someone thinking to visit Marrakech for the first time?

If there are particular restaurants or rooftop bars you want to try, it might be worth calling ahead to see if they have space on the day or booking in advance as some places get super busy!

If you’re going to visit Jardin Majorelle, book your ticket online in advance (maybe even days ahead) and still be prepared to queue when you get there. If I’m being truly honest, I wouldn’t bother, there’s a reason I didn’t include it on my must-see list.

How long should they stay?

If you only want to see the city then 3-4 days is enough but if you want to venture out I would aim for 5.

What would be the best time to visit?

I think early May, far away from Easter or other school holidays is ideal.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Make sure you have plenty of local currency, you can only get it locally and there are very few ATMs so as soon as you see one, go for it! Euros are accepted but not everywhere, especially in the souks. Make sure you have space in your luggage for your purchases, trust me, you will walk away with vase (or two) you never knew you needed.
