Ramadan Kareem or Ramadan Mubarak! Which means we wish everyone a blessed and generous Ramadan. 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Ramadan is a time to practice self-restraint and self-reflection. Ramadan commences today for a month here in Marrakech. We note that majority if not all tourists destinations and restaurants are not affected. However it is good to note to be mindful at this time. Ramadan observation is exactly like observing Lent (Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. Christians observe this period of preparation to celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter)
The three main things people focus on during Lent are prayer, fasting (abstaining from something to reduce distractions and focus more on God) and giving, or charity. Prayer during Lent focuses on our need for God’s forgiveness. It’s also about repenting (turning away from our sins) and receiving God’s mercy and love. In Islam fasting is seen to cleanse the soul and during this time, people fasting have more empathy for those in the world who are less fortunate.
During Ramadan the fast ends at dusk with a meal known as “iftar” which is shared with family, friends and neighbours. This is shared with the poor and vulnerable along with more money is donated during to the poor at this time. We like to highlight these near identical religious periods of observation in an attempt to demystify Ramadan and highlight the harmony between Abrahamic faiths. We purposely choose the cross and star pattern (which sit in perfect harmony) as a homage in our iconic courtyard in black and white Zelig’s – reflecting harmony of life here in Marrakech. We continue to pray for harmony and seek to put a stop persecution 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
