Would you say Marrakech is a place for families?

The Moroccan people were extremely hospitable and welcoming and adored our two-year-old, Oscar. We never felt hassled, unsafe or uncomfortable. There were food options for kids and the Le Jardin Secret and Bahia Palace were ideal for kids to run around. Riad Botanica was spacious and the suite had kids bunk beds, a cot and kitchen. They also provided an airport transfer and helped with booking everything ahead which was super helpful.

What do you look for before planning a family trip?

Research: Understanding the culture, language, customs, and important landmarks.
Travel Requirements: Checking visa requirements, vaccinations, and travel advisories.
Safety: Reviewing safety tips, local laws, and emergency contacts.
Accommodation: Booking places to stay that are safe, convenient, and well-reviewed.
Packing: Creating a packing list so you don’t forget any essentials ( especially when traveling with kids )

Can you please share your experience about travelling as a Family in Marrakech?

The city is vibrant and full of life, with a blend of old-world charm and modern amenities. Navigating the narrow streets of the Medina, visiting bustling souks, and experiencing the unique Moroccan hospitality is a must-do, but it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings.

What would be some of your travel tips inc what to pack and what to wear?

Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country with conservative dress codes, especially in rural areas and religious sites. There’s no strict dress code for tourists, it’s a respectful way to embrace the culture by dressing modestly, covering shoulders, and knees. Lightweight fabrics like linen work well, and bring a water bottle.

What did your family enjoy the most?

Exploring the vibrant souks, visiting historical sites like the Bahia Palace and Saadian Tombs, and relaxing in the beautiful Jardin Majorelle. Jemaa el-Fnaa square with its street performers, food stalls, and markets. Also a day trip to Agafay desert was amazing.

What was the food, weather like?

Moroccan cuisine is flavorful and diverse. Some must-try dishes include tagine, couscous, pastilla, and a variety of street foods like kebabs and pastries. Fresh mint tea is a staple. Marrakech has a semi-arid climate. Summers can be very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F). Winters are mild, with cooler evenings. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather for sightseeing.

What were the top five/ten things that you would say are on the must see as a family list whilst in Marrakech?

Jemaa el-Fnaa: The central square, lively day and night.
Majorelle Garden: A beautiful botanical garden with a museum.
Bahia Palace: Stunning architecture and gardens.
Koutoubia Mosque: An iconic landmark.
Saadian Tombs: Historical and ornate tombs.
Ben Youssef Madrasa: A historic Islamic school with intricate architecture.
Medina of Marrakech: The old city with its souks and alleys.
El Badi Palace: Historical ruins with impressive walls.
Le Jardin Secret: A peaceful garden in the heart of the Medina.
Marrakech Museum: Showcasing Moroccan art and culture.

How did you feel? Would you say it's safe to visit as a family?

Marrakech is generally safe for tourists, but it’s essential to stay vigilant, especially in crowded areas. Solo travelers should stick to well-lit and busy areas at night. We never felt unsafe.

What would you say to someone thinking of visiting Marrakech for the first time?

  • Embrace the local culture and be respectful of customs.
  • Bargain politely but firmly in the souks.
  • Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun.
  • Be cautious with street food if you have a sensitive stomach.
  • Use reputable guides and tour services.

How long should they stay?

A stay of 3 to 5 days is sufficient to see the main attractions and get a good feel for the city. If you want to explore nearby areas like the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira, you might want to extend your stay to a week.

What would be the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Marrakech is during spring (March to May) or fall (September to November) when the weather is warm but not excessively hot. These periods also avoid the peak tourist season of summer.
