Our Marrakech Community

Our Values

Culture & Community

Our home in Marrakech is built on connection, connection to place, people, stories and craft. As custodians of this space, we see it as our privilege to help preserve and celebrate the living traditions that make Morocco so deeply soulful. Through storytelling evenings, artisan collaborations, creative workshops and community partnerships, we invite guests to experience Marrakech beyond the surface — through the voices, hands and hearts of the people who shape it. Many of these experiences are led by family businesses, independent artists, craftspeople and community-led enterprises whose passion and creativity continue to define the cultural identity of Marrakech today. By connecting visitors directly with these makers, storytellers and entrepreneurs, we hope to create experiences that are not only memorable, but mutually enriching for both our guests and the local community. Whether creating your own piece of art, blending a signature fragrance, learning the journey of a handwoven rug, exploring hidden corners of the Medina with a local guide, or sharing tea with an artisan in their workshop, these encounters offer something increasingly rare in modern travel: the opportunity to slow down, connect and experience a destination through the people who call it home.

"The true magic of Marrakech lies not in its monuments, but in the people, stories and connections that bring them to life."

Marrakech's Only Female Oral Storyteller

Storytelling, Preserving an Ancient Moroccan Tradition

Storytelling has long been woven into the cultural fabric of Morocco. For centuries, stories were passed from one generation to the next in the bustling squares, courtyards and gathering places of the country, preserving history, wisdom, humour and folklore through the spoken word. This remarkable tradition is documented in Richard Hamilton's acclaimed book The Last Storytellers, which explores the disappearing art of Morocco's oral storytellers. Unfortunately, today, very few traditional storytellers remain. We are honoured to host Latifa, the only female oral storyteller in Marrakech and one of only a handful still practising this ancient tradition in Morocco.

Monthly, we hold this intimate cultural experience exclusively for our guests, offering a rare opportunity to connect with a living piece of Moroccan heritage within the peaceful surroundings of our Riad. Guests are invited to traditional Moroccan stories while enjoying a relaxed and a three course authentic culinary experience. Latifa brings centuries-old tales to life through the captivating art of oral storytelling. As the stories unfold, so too does a deeper understanding of Moroccan culture, traditions and the enduring power of human connection. More than an event, this is an opportunity to slow down, gather together and experience one of Morocco's most treasured cultural traditions in an intimate and memorable setting.

“The universe is made of stories, not of atoms.”

The 1000-year-old tradition of storytelling was practised in public squares in cities across Morocco and began in Marrakech when it was a young city growing with abundance from the gold and spice trades. Storytelling was used for many purposes, including sharing moral lessons and values, cultural beliefs and as a form of entertainment for the people. Latifa xxx

Supporting Local Makers, Artists & Community-led Businesses

Marrakech is a city of makers. Behind every object, scent, textile, recipe and rhythm is a person, a family, a workshop or a community. Our role is not simply to recommend places. It is to build bridges between guests and guides, travellers and makers, visitors and the deeper soul of Morocco.

One of the greatest privileges of living in Marrakech is the opportunity to connect directly with the extraordinary people who keep the city's creative traditions alive. Beyond the monuments, palaces and bustling souks lies a vibrant community of artists, makers, designers, craftspeople and entrepreneurs who are preserving generations of knowledge while reimagining Morocco's rich cultural heritage for the future.

Guests can spend time with artisans learning traditional weaving techniques, discover the stories behind Morocco's remarkable rug-making heritage, visit local ateliers and workshops, or explore the Medina alongside knowledgeable guides who bring the city's history, architecture and hidden corners to life. Whether creating your own piece of art, blending a signature fragrance, learning the journey of a handwoven rug or sharing tea with an artisan in their workshop, these encounters offer something increasingly rare in modern travel: the opportunity to slow down, connect and experience a destination through the people who call it home

The Soul Of A Rug

Celebrating Mina Abouzahra

Riad Botanica is delighted to feature a small part of "The Soul of a Rug" exhibition by Dutch-Moroccan designer and maker Mina Abouzahra. Mina’s work sits beautifully at the crossroads of culture, craft and contemporary design. Born in the Netherlands to Moroccan parents, she grew up between two worlds an experience that continues to shape her creative practice. Her work celebrates Moroccan craftsmanship, especially the traditions of female weavers. Through her collaborations with women’s weaving cooperatives, Mina helps preserve ancestral skills while supporting fair working conditions and proper wages for the artisans behind each piece. As part of our support, Riad Botanica is honoured to display selected works from The Soul of a Rug Exhibition within our reception, allowing guests to encounter the beauty, depth and human story behind Moroccan weaving.

Wellness Collaborations

Our community also includes yoga teachers, naturopaths, guides, makers, musicians, artists and wellbeing practitioners living and working locally in Marrakech. We are proud to collaborate with people whose work is rooted in care, creativity and cultural respect. Whether through a private movement class, a healing treatment, a guided medina experience or a shared meal, our intention is always the same: to create meaningful connection.

For us, meaningful hospitality extends beyond our walls. It is about fostering understanding, celebrating culture and creating genuine human connection, one conversation, one shared meal and one story at a time

- Angela & Mohamed Mellak
