It is believed that the Tuareg are descendants of the North African Berbers, and that they originated in the Fezzan region of Libya. They later expanded into regions bordering the Sahara, bringing local farming peoples into their own society.
This tribe of nomadic pastoralists are descendants of the indigenous Berber people. In addition to the impressive reputation they hold as warriors, the Tuareg also excel in trade, having long controlled the routes that traverse the Sahara, which include parts of Mali, Niger, Mauretania, Morocco, and southern Algeria. Why are the Tuaregs called the blue men?
The blue men of the Sahara – BBC Travel
While the Haalpulaar might have established the indigo daraas, it was the Tuareg people who adopted and popularised the fashion, and are considered the “blue men of the Sahara” – a name they eventually got because the colour of their clothing rubbed off onto their skin while being under the hot sun.
